Several months ago I Tivo'd "Spanglish", which I had initially planned on watching sooner than later. When it was originally released I wasn't keen on seeing it, mostly because the Adam Sandler drama, Punch Drunk Love, didn't impress me.
There are only a handful of comedians that can pull off drama/comedy and Sandler, who typically plays a goofy-doofy guy, isn't a master of these two hats yet. Despite this casting flub, Spanglish is a pretty good movie about two cultures, different in many ways, coming together under one roof.
The mother/daughter dynamic (housekeeper and her nina) is portrayed convincingly and the acting between the two actresses is some of the best I've seen, as far as family interaction goes, in awhile. There wasn't a moment where I wasn't in awe of the chemistry between them and that's saying something.
Oh, and Cloris Leachman shows how good of an actress she really can be when she isn't drowning her sorrows away.
Overall I enjoyed it save for a few niggles, especially the ending which I felt was undeniably bittersweet but unfulfilling.
